The Amakhala Game Reserve located in the malaria free Eastern Cape of South Africa began in 1999 as a joint conservation venture between the owners of six lodges who are direct descendants of the original Frontier settlers some five generations ago and arrived here with the British settlers of 1820. The families originally settled to farm sheep and cattle on the wild and often hostile Zuurveld.
SAFARI LODGES AND TENTED CAMPS
The Game Reserve offers a wide variety of 3, 4 & 5-star owner-managed experiences. The Private Game Reserve offers guests accommodation in a selection of 10 Luxury establishments made up of restored Country houses, Safari Lodges and Tented camps located in different areas of the large 8 500 hectares Game Reserve.
Some dwellings are owned and managed by fifth generation Frontier Settlers families.
WILDLIFE VIEWING AND SAFARI TRIPS
Day and night game viewing trips under the guidance of professional game rangers are available. Wildlife likely to be encountered during the game drives in the Game Reserve are: the "Big Five", lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and plenty of antelope species.
Visits to the nearby Addo Elephant National Park can be arranged at request.
Game Reserves (especially in South Africa) are large areas of land set aside and protected for wild animals.
South Africa still has a wealth of wild animals. We also have a beautiful list of birds that you will find at most of our Game Reserves.
